In a vibrant display of unity and determination, thousands of Somalilanders, their British allies, and advocates gathered peacefully outside Downing Street in London today.

The large-scale rally, organized by the UK Somaliland Alliance, the Somaliland UK Mission, and various grassroots organizations, called on the United Kingdom to formally re-recognize the Republic of Somaliland—its former British Protectorate—as an independent sovereign nation.

The demonstrators, waving flags and chanting for self-determination, emphasized Somaliland’s long-standing stability, democratic governance, and commitment to justice in contrast to ongoing challenges in the Horn of Africa region. Organizers described the mobilization as a historic moment, underscoring that recognition is “overdue” and a matter of moral responsibility, historical truth, and international democratic principles. “The voice of Somaliland cannot—and will not—be ignored,” they declared.

Adding significant political weight to the event were powerful speeches from prominent UK figures. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK—currently the most popular party in the country by many measures—took the stage to express unwavering support. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Farage praised the community’s persistent campaigning and peaceful conduct, noting it has earned growing public trust in Britain.

“For many years you have supported your cause and your right to self-determination,” Farage said. “I tell you the fact that you are gaining a lot of public trust in this country. I might be the first speaker for you, but believe me there are many more in parliament listening. I am with you all the way, keep campaigning.”

Echoing the sentiment, Conservative MP Gavin Williamson, a longtime champion of Somaliland’s cause who has previously introduced parliamentary bills on the issue and even holds honorary citizenship there, delivered a passionate call to action. He highlighted Somaliland’s freedoms and democratic achievements while sharply criticizing the situation in Somalia.

“We stand here and we see so many people said it never happen a Somaliland recognized another country—but what has happened, so much more has to happen next,” Williamson urged.

“For far too long we have waited for the United Kingdom to recognize Somaliland… Somaliland is a country that has freedom, democracy, and Somalia is a terrorist state that causes destruction. Now it’s time for the British government to open its eyes.”

In a follow-up message on X (formerly Twitter), Williamson reinforced his stance: “As the world opens its eyes and realises that the time is now to recognise Somaliland, Britain needs to take action and start leading the way as against being an obstacle. The UK needs to stop supporting the Somali terrorist state and back the democratic nation of Somaliland.”

The rally comes amid growing international momentum for Somaliland’s recognition, including recent developments elsewhere that have spotlighted its case. Protesters and speakers alike framed the event as a turning point, insisting that Britain—given its historical ties—should lead the way in upholding principles of self-determination and stability in the Horn of Africa.

With cross-party voices now amplifying the call and public demonstrations growing in scale, the pressure on the UK government to reconsider its long-held position appears to be mounting. Somaliland’s supporters vow to keep pushing until justice is served.
