On Tuesday, Somalia secured a historic seat on the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, marking a significant milestone since the council’s establishment in 2003. This achievement was the result of Somalia’s election to the seat in February 2026, and the country will hold the position for the next two years. This demonstrates the trust and confidence that other African Union members have in Somalia’s ability to contribute to peace and security in the region. In a symbolic gesture, Somalia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union, Mr. Abdilahi Warfaa, officially raised the country’s flag at the Peace and Security Council Center of the African Union, marking the beginning of a new era for Somalia. This move also presents an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic ties among African Union member countries, giving Somalia a voice and influence in crucial decision making processes related to peace, stability, and conflict resolution in Africa. Somali officials have hailed this achievement as historic and unprecedented, as it elevates the country’s status and role in international arenas, particularly in peacekeeping, stability, and cooperation with other African countries. It also allows Somalia to play a crucial role in implementing plans and policies related to peacebuilding, defending human rights, and preventing security threats in the region.
