Puntland has stated that the bilateral ties between Somalia and Turkey need to be reviewed, as they pose a threat to the country’s independence unless they are based on efficiency and balance. According to the state minister of presidential affairs, Mr. Abdifatah Mohamed Abdinur, Turkey has played a significant role in the rebuilding and reconstruction of Somalia, including the development of infrastructure, provision of social services, and training of the army. However, he emphasizes that it is important to not just focus on the aid provided, but also to review how these agreements serve the long-term interests of Somalia. He warns that if the army becomes too involved in political affairs, it could create tension and division. Additionally, he highlights the potential economic benefits of Somalia’s natural resources and minerals, but also cautions that without a political settlement, they could also cause trouble. He raises concerns about the efficiency of the agreements signed, stating that they do not always serve the interests of the public and can create suspicion and lack of trust, especially in a nation that is still recovering from years of instability. The state minister also addresses security cooperation, acknowledging the importance of training for the army but expressing fear over foreign influence that could compromise the independence of security agencies. In contrast, former Somali Prime Minister Mr. Omar Abdirashid Ali has spoken out about the political situation in the country and the future of its natural resources. He expresses concern over the postponement of important national agreements, including those related to the constitution, election laws, and policies on oil and minerals. He notes that the term of the Somali parliament will expire in three days and calls on the Somali President to hold a national consultative conference to decide on the process and timing of federal elections
