In a lively ceremony held at the iconic Jees Hotel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland proudly launched the Somaliland Diaspora Portal and Mapping Database. This cutting-edge online platform represents a bold and forward-looking initiative to directly connect the homeland with its vibrant diaspora scattered across the world. The event, themed “Connecting Somaliland with its Global Diaspora,” brought together high-ranking government officials, respected academics, diplomats, and diaspora members in a display of unity and optimism. Attendees celebrated what many described as a game-changing tool for national advancement. “This portal opens a direct channel for our diaspora to stay updated on government developments and access vital services from various ministries in real time,” declared Ugbad Nassir Omar, Director of the Diaspora Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We are committed to creating an efficient and inclusive system that empowers Somalilanders abroad to engage meaningfully with their country’s progress.” Mohamed Abdirahman Hassan, Director General of the Ministry, underscored the diaspora’s enduring importance: “Our global Somaliland community has long been a driving force in development and diplomacy. The Diaspora Database Portal is a strategic leap to reinforce these vital connections, mobilizing their expertise, insights, and economic contributions to fuel Somaliland’s growth and resilience.” Minister Abdirahman Dahir Aaden reflected on the diaspora’s historical sacrifices: “From our hard-fought struggle for recognition and independence, the diaspora stood as the unwavering backbone of Somaliland. This new platform solidifies that profound bond, streamlining access to information, services, and opportunities while nurturing lasting partnerships between the government and its worldwide family.” At its core, the portal features an advanced mapping database that will systematically register Somalilanders globally—gathering details on demographics, professional skills, expertise, and investment interests. This comprehensive registry is poised to unlock powerful avenues for economic investment, knowledge sharing, diplomatic advocacy, and collective nation-building efforts. The launch arrives at a pivotal moment for Somaliland, as international engagement accelerates and the diaspora’s role evolves from supporters to co-architects of the nation’s future. With this dynamic digital gateway now live, Somaliland embarks on an exciting new chapter of inclusive, diaspora-powered development and global solidarity.
