The Somali Future Council has released a press statement strongly opposing any potential extension of the terms of the Federal Parliament and the President of Somalia. The council emphasized that, according to the Provisional Constitution of Somalia (2012), the term of the Federal Parliament is set to end on April 14, 2026, while the term of the President will expire on May 15, 2026. The council also cautioned against repeating past mistakes, as Somalia has previously faced serious political disputes due to attempts to extend mandates. Specifically, the council referenced the tensions and security challenges that arose from the political crisis in 2021. The council urged the government to refrain from taking any actions that could result in a term extension, warning that such actions could reignite political instability and undermine the country’s fragile progress.
