The Himilo Political Party, led by former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, recently issued a press statement outlining their stance on the amendment of the constitution. In the statement, the party made it clear that they do not recognize the decision of the Somali Parliament to amend the provisional constitution. They believe that the way the amendment was implemented was not legal and that any changes to the constitution should only be made through proper legal channels and with the input of all concerned institutions and sectors of society. The party also called on the current Somali President, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, to focus on leading the country to elections in order to avoid political crisis and uncertainty, as his term is set to expire. This statement comes after the bicameral parliament approved the constitutional amendment last Wednesday, with the Speaker of the Lower House, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (also known as Adan Madobe), announcing that the term of the 11th parliament will be five years and the incumbent President will remain in office until May 2027, as stated in the constitution. However, opposition politicians, as well as the regions of Jubaland and Puntland, have rejected the new constitution, citing concerns about potential political crisis.
