Vice President urges media to be ethical & shun divisive journalism

The VP H.E. Abdirahman Abdilahi Ismail (Saili’i) has called upon the journalism fraternity of the country to avoid indulging in anything that divides the society as they go about their duties. Calling upon them to be ethical, he cautioned them against disseminating items that render people asunder.

The VP was the guest of honour at the Somaliland Press Day cum 7th Awke Award anniversary held at the Hargeisa Cultural Centre on the 9th of November.

The awards are in honour of the celebrated international veteran journalist the late Ahmed Awke.

H.E. Abdirahman, who was flanked by Information Minister Hon. Suleiman Yusuf Ali Kore, similarly called on the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) to work on improving the skills and knowledge of journalists and stepping up training.

He urged the journalists to blend their services with positive social issues beneficial to society and nation-building as expected of them and not dwell and focus only on politicking as the general perception of the status quo.

He called for proficiency in the profession that adheres to ethics hence reporting accurate and unbiased information to the members of the public.

In conclusion, the Somaliland Journalists’ Association SOLJA gave awards to journalists who competed in programs related to social issues.
