Al-Shabab on Wednesday attacked a military base in Ali Guduud Mosque district in Middle Shabelle region.
Al-Shabab began the attack with an explosive laden vehicles targeting the base and followed by hours of heavy fighting between Somali troops and Al-Shabab fighters.
The military base housing national and local troops.
According to reports, the two sides used all kinds of light and heavy weapons which resulted heavy casualties including deaths and injuries.
Reports say that the Somali troops repulsed Al-Shabab raid but local residents confirmed that they could still hear the gunfire within the town.
Reinforcements from Custodial Corps and Turkey’s specially trained units known as Harima’ad reached the past few days in the town and established bases in Ali Guduud Mosque after the government received reports on Al-shabab’s movement.
Reinforcements left from the coastal town of Adale to reinforce the Somali troops in Ali Guduud Mosque who are engaged in a fighting with the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group of Al-Shabab.
Al-Shabab’s affiliated media have reported that the group has taken over the town.
The Somali gov’t has not issued a statement regarding the attack that Al-Shabab launched an attack on the military base in Ali Guduud Mosque.
